撒但美麗的一面

由常春藤出版社出版，賴世雄編譯的《英文寫作常犯錯誤辨析》 (Common Mistakes in English)，在第161頁中，有兩點嚴重的錯誤，可見連專業的出版社都難免犯下嚴重的錯誤！

第一個錯誤是，priest 和 pastor不分。

Last night he went to the church to visit the priest. (O)

(昨晚他到教堂拜訪牧師。)

priest在各個宗教，一般意思都為「祭司」。這點毫無疑問。

舉《聖經》的希伯來書為例，

來7:23 「那些成為祭司的，數目本來多，是因為有死阻隔，不能長久。」

Heb 7:23 “And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death.”

根據基督教的聖經，凡是基督徒都是神的祭司，即使是平信徒。

1Pet2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

彼前2:9 惟有你們是被揀選的族類，是有君尊的祭司，是聖潔的國度，是屬神的子民，要叫你們宣揚那召你們出黑暗入奇妙光明者的美德。

因此基督徒不用priest來稱「牧師」。因為每個基督徒都是神的priest。

「牧師」的專有名詞是pastor或minister.

根據American heritage dictionary，「minister」的定義：One who is authorized to perform religious functions in a Christian church, especially a Protestant church.

而pastor的定義，A Christian minister or priest having spiritual charge over a congregation or other group.

從上面定義可看見，minister和pastor主要用在「基督教」上，就是「牧師」之意。

但反之，在「羅馬天主教」或東正教等非「基督教(新教)」，而用 priest 來作為「神父」之意。根據「牛津高階英語辭典」，priest的定義為：a person who is qualified to perform religious duties and ceremonies in the Roman Catholic, Anglican and Orthodox Churches:

在看Webster大辭典對priest的定義也是一樣：one authorized to perform the sacred rites of a religion especially as a mediatory agent between humans and God specifically : an Anglican, Eastern Orthodox, or Roman Catholic clergyman ranking below a bishop and above a deacon.

很清楚地，這些權威性大辭典都強調是priest在東正教或天主教才被用於較高層的神職人員，也就是「神父」，不被用於指「平信徒」。

因此回到英文寫作常犯錯誤辨析》的161頁上，

Last night he went to the church to visit the priest. (O)

(昨晚他到教堂拜訪牧師。)

上面的priest正確譯法是「神父」而不是「牧師」。

再來，同書的161頁第一個例句，

On Sundays I go to church. (X)

每個禮拜天我都到教堂做禮拜。

這裡把church翻作「教堂」不能算完全錯，但是非常「不道地」。

一般基督徒去church做主日崇拜，都說「上教會」，而不會說「上教堂」。

把church翻作「教堂」就像把come home譯為『回到房子』一樣不道地。

你今天說「我回到我的房子了」，我們聽得懂，但就是不道地，聽起來怪怪的。我們會說：「我們回到家了。」

同理，當人們說「教會」時，往往並不是指一座「建築物」，而是一個敬拜神的，讓心靈休息的場所。所以一般人都說「去教會」、「上教會」而極少有人才會說「上教堂」、「去教堂」。除非今天你為觀光緣故去參訪某間church，可以說「參觀了某間教堂」。不然一般說來，都以「教會」這詞來得道地。
